2026 State of the League: Conference Realignment Has Reached Fantasy Football

We've technically had divisions before, but if I’m honest, I don’t think they’ve ever mattered. I’ve tried a few different things over the years to be marginally funny, like Madden or NCAA difficulty ratings or tiers of football, but we probably all looked at them occasionally and then ignored them the rest of the season. In fact, I cared about them so much I forgot to even change them last year.
So, in my regular fashion of not thinking too much about football, I ruminated on it because this bugged me.
It bugged me so much I sat at my desk, stared at a computer screen for too long and began contemplating random ideas to fix this. And I think I landed on one that I actually really kind of like. Honestly, I’d be interested in giving it a go even though it’s definitely a little gimmicky, but it does resemble a real-life sports equivalent.
What is it, you ask? I realigned the divisions the same way I typically have in the past, based on last year's standings, and tweaked the conference titles in a way that makes me laugh. That part stayed the same.
What has changed is that I’m proposing the performance of your entire division is going to matter.
Midseason and at the end of the year.
Kind of a lot.
Here's how I realigned the teams and divisions this year, and then I’ll get into how your division’s performance will directly affect us all. And yes, these are dumb AI images.

The SEC. The big dawg. A professional league hidden under a shroud of amateurism. Looks right for us. We’ve got a Blackfoot OG I really got to know selling security systems in college, a guy I met while he was on his mission who used to come to my house in Baltimore to use the internet, his wife, whom I have still never actually met, and me. We’ve earned our spot here. I don’t think I’ve ever given a real exposé on the composition of our league so let’s do that here.
Cadillac has been in this thing from the beginning, and I've probably played fantasy football against him longer than anyone else in the league. Why Cadillac for Blair? After Cadillac Williams and his smooth style. Blair has a tendency to make things look easy. It fits.
Drew joined years later after sitting at my house one Sunday night in Baltimore while our league was drafting and basically knew right at that moment he wanted in. He kept in touch with me and found his way into our league. Dude’s also got some real game to him. He let me play with the missionaries when they got together. He’s nice.
Kaitlyn patiently waited for an opening of her own and has since proven she knows exactly what she's doing. She also spent part of last year's draft watching her husband Drew take players she was planning to draft, panic picked a couple of times because of it, and still managed to steal Khalil Shakir from me right before I wanted him and still finished last year in second place.
Now we all get to be division teammates, which means Drew and Kaitlyn aren't just capable of stealing players from one another. Their bad decisions can actually cost each other something.

Big Ten. Some real powerhouses, except in years where it all falls apart and we see the paper tigers. Strong conference… sometimes.
Jeff is the eldest statesman of this league. Biggest Packers fan I know. I mean, who else mirrors his own fantasy football history with that of the Packers? He won the first two championships in our league. He, like Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, has been playing fantasy football far beyond when he planned to retire from it. The biggest difference is he doesn’t need to retire. He’s still a force in our league. He's also mostly responsible for me becoming a Bills fan, so basically everything that has happened in this league since its creation can probably be traced back to him.
Dad... Everyone thanks you!
Then there’s Jaxson, whose dedication and commitment to drafting former BYU players has lasted long enough that it's not even a joke anymore. He puts his shoulder to the wheel and just grinds at those picks. So much so that it has become a legitimate draft strategy. If a BYU player makes an NFL roster, Jaxson’s already got him 4 rounds higher on his big board.
I swear... if you ever lose your BYU love...
Josh has been one of my closest friends since we were roommates in Rexburg. He knows sports, follows the NFL closely, and somehow keeps getting beat in our league. I don’t get it. It makes no sense to me. He has also had the privilege of choosing his draft slot more often than anyone should ever have to do and then spends the next several months talking to me about how he made the wrong choice.
The choice is clear, Josh. You should have taken Josh Allen. End of story. And you knew it before the draft and talked yourself into someone else.
And Bradley has been here since the beginning, quietly winning games while I routinely find some reason not to like his team. This has gone poorly for me often enough that I should probably stop doing it.
I probably won't.
My brother recruited Bradley into the league at inception and then decided to move to Finland and bail on us all, so Bradley is left as the sole IQ over 150 in the league. How he continues to put up with the rest of us simpletons I'll never know.

Come on. That’s funny, right? The Pac-2. What a time to be alive. A time when college football managed to destroy the Pac-12 and leave Oregon State and Washington State standing around wondering what happened. How is it still the Pac-12 anyway? I think conferences should be forced to have the number of teams in their league in their title. But because I can’t force it, I want to honor the Pac-2 in our league.
Josh is my brother-in-law. I married his youngest sister. His boys are studs. He consistently drafts teams I like. He's one of the guys whose draft I usually look at afterward and think I probably would have done something pretty similar and I think I like his team better than mine.
Just not last year...
Brian and I went through the social work program together in undergrad and somehow both survived our first real mental health experiences while having absolutely no clue what we were doing. One of our clients promised me that when he eventually took over the world, he would put my face on the $100 bill.
That hasn't happened yet and I'm beginning to question his follow-through.
And yes, his name WAS Donald from Mar-a-Lago.
Then we have Weston, my son, who is cutting his fantasy teeth against guys who have been doing this longer than he's been alive. It’s not all that surprising to me coming from the dude who has more genuine confidence than any other human I've met.
Not fake teen bravado either. Completely unshakable. I don't know where he gets it, but he certainly doesn't enter this league thinking any of you know more than he does.
Including me.
And Joel, Josh Jenson's brother, football coach, former commissioner for a year when I couldn't do it, and the guy who followed one of the rougher stretches of his life by turning around and winning this league.
I imagine that feeling of liberty from the shackles... err, I mean winning our league, is something akin to when Brett Favre went bananas against the Raiders on national television and knew there was an angel on the field making it happen.
Yeah... probably pretty close to that feeling.
Allow me to offer the warmest of welcomes to all four of you to the Pac-2. I'm sure you'll all be thrilled to be here.
Hopefully you all have better foresight than George Kliavkoff.
Your Bad Lineup Decisions Can Now Hurt Four People
So let’s get back to how the divisions matter. Like I said, I didn’t think they mattered at all.
Turns out, Sleeper does make them matter a little more than I realized.
I went down a rabbit hole trying to figure out exactly how our playoff seeding works and learned that all division winners automatically make the playoffs. The two division winners with the best records get the byes, then the remaining playoff spots are filled normally.
Apparently we’ve been in Sleeper for a few years without me fully understanding that. So they do matter in that way and I’m good with that.
We're keeping that exactly how Sleeper does it. Win your division and you're in. Even if that eventually gives us our own 7-7 NFC South champion while some better team gets screwed... well, that's football tradition and no one hates change more than we do.
But what if our divisions mattered in a completely different way too?
Allow me to introduce you to "The Conference Cup."
Yes, they are actually called divisions in the app, but Conference Cup sounds better. And if you haven’t noticed I've already established how much respect I have for accurate conference nomenclature.
The concept itself is pretty simple. Every week we'll add together the scores of all four teams in each division. Whichever division scores the most that week gets 3 points. Second gets 2. Last gets 1.
That's it. No BCS formula. No strength of schedule. You score points. Your division scores points. We add them together and see what conference is the best. Try not to suck. Haha!
Let me talk through a part of it that I think could be fun.
For the first time, there would be a reason for you to care that someone completely outside your matchup made a terrible lineup decision. If Blair forgets somebody is on a bye, that is no longer just a Blair problem. That's my problem too. And Drew's. And Kaitlyn's.
Imagine it's Sunday morning and one of your division teammates still has an OUT player sitting in the flex. In previous years, that's funny. Or, more likely, I get a text from somebody about how unfair it is that the owner remembered to set his lineup against them but forgot to do it against someone else.
Something like this would make us all a little more invested.
That kind of system could turn into reminding each other to set our freaking lineups! It might lead to you getting a message questioning your start/sit decisions when nobody asked for their opinion. You might be a little more invested in some random Monday night player getting one more catch because your division is 1.7 points behind another one. I love that idea. With an Everlast “White Trash Beautiful” kind of love.
I’d especially look forward to the first time somebody loses his own matchup and is still genuinely irritated at one of his division mates for not scoring enough.
At some point while thinking through this, I realized I had basically stolen Adam Silver's idiotic idea for the NBA Cup. A midseason competition layered on top of the games we're already playing, mostly designed to give everyone another reason to care about games they otherwise wouldn't.
Except ours would actually matter.
Way more, if for no other reason than the NBA Cup matters less than practice does if you have a killer crossover. And unlike the NBA Cup, we don't have to play on a court that looks like an 8-year-old discovered gradient in Microsoft Paint in 1996.
Instead of awarding a banner that gets sent to a 3rd world country because no one wants to hang that stupid thing, we'll be giving away FAAB.
So after Week 7, the division leading the Conference Cup standings gets an additional $30 in FAAB for every manager in that division.
Not $30 total. I’m saying thirty each. If we do it, I think it should matter.
We moved to FAAB last year and everyone seemed to like the idea of it, even the guys who chose to treat their FAAB like Andy Reid treats timeouts. No clue what to do with them.
Thirty extra dollars halfway through the season is enough to actually change what you can do. It's enough that when somebody in your division leaves 27 points sitting on his bench, you may start wondering why I'm friends with him.
Or why you're related to him. There are a lot of those in this league.
The Conference Cup would keep going after the midseason payout. We'll score it through Week 14, right up to the playoffs. The division with the most Cup points at the end of the regular season wins the 2026 Conference Cup.
[INSERT PLASTIC CHAMPAGNE STREAMER TOY AND KAZOO SOUNDS]
The four managers who win the end-of-year Cup get first dibs on setting next year's Rivalry Week matchups.
I'll get into Rivalry Week in a minute because I like that concept just as much as this one.
The only boring housekeeping item would be what to do with ties. If two divisions tie in a given week, they'll split the available Cup points. If the overall standings are tied at the Week 7 payout or after Week 14, total fantasy points during that stretch breaks the tie.
That's about as complicated as I want this to get.
The Conference Cup has nothing to do with the playoffs, standings, or our league winner. Sleeper's existing division and playoff rules stay exactly as they are. This is an entirely separate competition.
If Thanksgiving Wasn’t Uncomfortable Enough
Speaking of Rivalry Week…
One of the things the NFL has gotten right in my mind is how rivalries develop based on their scheduling. Two games against division opponents. A guaranteed game against the teams in the other divisions in your conference that finished in the same place as yours.
Ravens vs. Steelers. Packers vs. Bears. Manning vs. Brady. Bills vs. KC Swifties.
Our league? We have quite a few natural blood rivalries.
Week 12 is Thanksgiving week. It’s my favorite holiday. Why not add another layer to it and make sure those who do have relatives in the league have to play each other?
Even better, there isn’t a single NFL team on bye that week.
Naturally, that made it Rivalry Week.
So that’s what we’re doing. Thanksgiving week is Rivalry Week from now on. Unless the idea is dumb, in which case I’ll blame Sean McDermott for everything and move on.
Let’s talk for a second about the highly sophisticated matchup process involving family relationships, league history, and then eventually running out of people who were related to one another.
Uncle Jrue vs. Joe Buck Yourself
Drew vs. Kaitlyn
Let’s start with an obvious one.
Husband versus wife on Thanksgiving week? Check.
Same division? Check.
We already know they care about their team more than their marriage, now let’s pretend for a second they decided to care about the Conference Cup. We have a perfectly plausible scenario where Kaitlyn spends all week hoping Drew scores 170 points and still sets her lineup to beat him by 50.
Same goes for Drew.
Marriage is about supporting one another. This matchup ensures that.
See? This is why I’m a counseling professional. I’m out here strengthening marriages through fantasy football without anyone even asking me to. You’re welcome.
Atwater vs. Texasforever
Blair vs. Jaxson
Brothers.
Cadillac against Cosmo.
I don’t actually know enough about their childhood shenanigans to pretend to know who still owes whom for something that happened before Y2K ended the world, but we all know there’s history.
Golf? Past Madden games gone wrong? Does Blair still try to go Big Baby Davis on Jaxson when they hoop?
I’d bet all three…
Rafi Bomb vs. Face planting
Josh vs. Joel
More brothers.
Two Giants fans, two Yankees fans, and two guys who probably already have enough shared sports misery without me manufacturing more of it.
Honestly, if the Giants haven’t already ruined Thanksgiving for both of them by Week 12, maybe this matchup can finish the job.
Sorry… that was a low blow. Their teams have experienced more success than any of mine have ever dreamed of.
They’re brothers and like too many of the same teams for my taste. They need at least one routinely scheduled football game a year where they’re required to root against each other. Have at it.
Kelly Tough vs. jdherrud
Nick vs. Josh
There isn’t some long-standing Bills-Seahawks history to lean on here. No deep-seated dispute from which all competitive juices flow in this matchup. He’s too good a guy for any of that to happen. This one is simpler.
I simply don’t like losing. To Josh. That’s it.
He knows football, he’s competitive, and he got to join our league and win the whole darn thing in year one. Then he got to smugly tell me how competitive our league is while secretly thinking to himself that we’re all a bunch of idiots.
Okay, that last part isn’t true.
But the fact that he came in burning hot and took our league by storm got my attention. That’s a matchup I want because I’ll have to be on.
Thanksgiving seems like the perfect day to guarantee that opportunity, with a little extra time to fine-tune my roster just enough to sit the wrong guy.
Besides, family gatherings already have enough completely unnecessary scorekeeping going on. Why should fantasy football be left out? Maybe I’ll ask Whitney to help me that week…
Over the Taysom Hill vs. Ertz2Hurtz
Jeff vs. Weston
Grandfather versus grandson.
The oldest manager in the league against the youngest.
One of them started following football with legends like Lombardi, Starr, Jim Taylor, Nitschke, Forrest Gregg, Willie Wood.
The other was born after NFL RedZone was invented. Actually, he was born the same year as Siri, Twitch, Uber, Snapchat, and Minecraft. Talk about a strong draft class.
Dad has forgotten more football than Wes has had time to learn, while Weston has enough confidence to believe that fact is completely irrelevant.
Honestly, that feels about right. This is a fun matchup.
Snickle Frits vs. Team 15
Bradley vs. Brian
…
[CRICKETS]
Ummm…
Well…
They are…
the only two guys in the league who aren’t related to anyone else?
Clearly the premier rivalry game of the week. BOOK IT!
(If you missed it the first time around there’s a Pizza Hut joke in there. You’re welcome Bradley. Think I could still use an old certificate for a free personal pan pizza?)
That gives us our first Rivalry Week.
The games themselves are completely normal. They count toward the regular standings, division standings, and Conference Cup just like every other week. I’ll simply replace whatever Sleeper originally scheduled for Week 12 with these matchups.
That does create one weird possibility. You may play someone multiple times during the season or even end up playing them in back-to-back weeks.
Oh well.
The NFL made me think about Jets-Dolphins twice in three weeks last year and I survived. We’ll figure it out.
Starting next year, the Conference Cup winners would get to make this more interesting. The four managers from the winning division would get first choice of Rivalry Week opponents, going in order based on individual points scored. Pick someone and both teams come off the board. I’ll set whatever matchups are left.
If you want to play your brother again, we’ll set that up. If you’re like Weston, you probably want to match up against the defending champion. Shoot your shot. If you want someone because you think their team sucks and you’d like a Thanksgiving layup? Well... that’s a bold strategy, Cotton.
If that were to happen, I’d want us all to take that personally and boom! We now have a rivalry.
So Thanksgiving Week is Rivalry Week and now all we need are some terribly designed jerseys….
IDP Should No Longer Be a Kicker Who Actually Tackles
Another rule change I’d like to suggest.
I know most of us like having defensive players, so I’m against eliminating the IDP position.
It’s simply bothered me that for years we have one position that almost doesn’t matter because we all just need to find a LB who hunts tackles and call it a day. Anything else that guy gives us is gravy. Not much thought goes into that roster spot.
Congratulations to us. We just reinvented the fantasy kicker position.
If we’re going to have defensive players, I think we should make them matter. That was the driving force behind the scoring changes we tried before where we rewarded way too many points for sacks and turnovers. Probably too radical.
Instead of one generic IDP, this proposed change would start:
One defensive lineman
One linebacker
One defensive back
Same scoring. Nothing else changes there.
What we would actually have to do is think about who we’re drafting on defense instead of sorting linebackers by tackles and grabbing whichever one has a bunch.
I don’t know for sure, but I’d bet the difference between DL1 and DL12 is pretty significant. Might be true of defensive backs too. Less true at LB, but you couldn’t just fill the position with your favorite edge rusher and hope he gets three sacks when you need a Monday night miracle comeback anymore.
How would it affect us? Instead of our league only starting 12 total defensive players, we’d now be starting 36. To me, that feels like enough to make defense an actual part of roster construction without turning this into a league where we’re drafting for two straight days and debating who the third safety is in Jacksonville.
It’s Caleb Ransaw, in case you wondered.
We’d simply be adding two starting roster spots, keeping the bench exactly the same size, and expanding the draft from 16 rounds to 18.
I actually kind of like the roster squeeze. If we’re going to say defensive players matter, then they should cost us something. A little more thought about defensive draft picks. Maybe consider how it affects bench flexibility. A little extra effort in Round 17.
That's rich coming from me because one of my favorite keeper strategies has basically been refusing to draft an IDP so I can use that last roster spot on another offensive lottery ticket.
This is a proposal and would need a league vote for approval.
If this passes, we start DL, LB, and DB and draft 18 rounds. If it doesn’t, we keep the one IDP and stay at 16.
O’Doyle rules!
Also, majority rules.
Keepers
Time for the yearly reminder of the keeper rule I hope we mostly know by now.
Each team gets one keeper from last year’s roster.
The rules are the same:
You had to draft the player.
He had to still be on your roster at the end of the season.
Anyone drafted in Rounds 1 through 4 is ineligible.
Keeping a player costs a pick four rounds earlier than where he was drafted the previous year.
You can keep the same player in consecutive seasons until that escalating cost eventually makes him ineligible.
I put together a keeper board showing everyone’s eligible options and what each player would cost this year. That list is at the bottom of this article. I’m 95% sure that’s the fully accurate list.
Keeper selections are due Saturday, September 5.
You can enter your keeper directly in Sleeper or send it to me and I’ll take care of it. I have to customize the draft board afterward anyway, so either works for me.
The 2026 Draft Order
Josh Jenson once again earned the right to choose his draft position by winning the consolation bracket.
He chose #3.
I’m documenting this now. In August 2027 we can all tell Josh what he should have done and how not to overthink it next season.
Good luck, man. Just kidding. I think 3 or 4 is probably the right choice this year for superflex.
The rest of us get what we earned based on last year’s finish.

I’ve set the draft for Sunday, September 6 at 5:00 PM MDT. Let me know if that doesn’t work for you.
I’ll be picking 12th, but I’m looking to trade down. I’m looking for a second and cash considerations.
FAAB Stays
We switched to FAAB last year and everyone seemed to like it.
So we’re keeping it.
$100 budget. Same rules.
Although apparently liking FAAB and actually using FAAB are two very different things.
I went back and looked at our Week 17 standings. As a league, we still had $609 in unused FAAB.
$609!
We collectively spent less than half of the fake money we were given.
Seven of you still had at least $55. Five of you had $79 or more.
And Josh Herrud and Weston spent exactly $0. All $100 just sitting there.
Josh treated his FAAB like Marshawn Lynch at the goal line. Perfectly available, blatantly obvious to everyone watching, and yet for some reason never used.
Weston... I don’t even have a Seahawks excuse for you.
This isn’t the NFL salary cap. There is no rollover. Nobody is giving you a compensatory draft pick because you were fiscally responsible with imaginary money.
Spend your darn fake money!
League Dues
League dues are $20 this year. Up $5 to rebuild the league reserve we used to have back before Covid made everything expensive.
Send them whenever you want before the season kicks off.
That’s it. I have nothing else to say about this.
League Votes
Somehow I’ve written several thousand words to tell you that you only actually get to vote on two things.
Should we adopt the Conference Cup?
Should we replace the generic IDP position with DL, LB, and DB?
The polls are posted below the article along with the keepers.
I’m open to any discussion about either one. Send me your thoughts or put them in our group text. We just need both decisions finalized before keepers are due on September 5 so everyone knows exactly what the roster and draft will look like.
Lastly, I’d like to submit a formal application to join the Pac-2, but I don’t want to pay the preseason buyout fee. Anyone want to cover me?
TL;DR
League votes need to be finalized before keeper selections are due
Keepers due Saturday, September 5
Draft Sunday, September 6 at 5:00 PM MDT
Draft is 18 rounds if the IDP proposal passes, 16 if it doesn’t
League dues are $20
Rivalry Week is Week 12
Playoffs begin Week 15
Division winners automatically make the playoffs
The two division winners with the best records get the byes
Conference Cup leader after Week 7 gets $30 extra FAAB per manager
Conference Cup champion is crowned after Week 14
That’s all, folks!
Efficient, never meandering or self-aggrandizing, as always.
I’ve been doing these posts for a long time now, and I still enjoy putting way too much thought into a fantasy football league that really has turned into my favorite way to stay connected to people in my life, even if I see very few of you in real life anymore.
That’s actually it. I’ve spent too much time on this. Vote below. Let me know who you want as your keeper. Make sure to send me $20 sometime before the season. Make sure you’re ready to draft before September 6. It’s close to the time of year where I genuinely feel like Marv Levy when he said, “Where else would you rather be than right here, right now?”
Side note… if you skipped straight to the TL;DR… you won’t just get demoted to the Pac-2 next year. We'll go straight to soccer and bring in relegation.
