Our Tried and True Guidelines for Trading Future Draft Picks

If you're considering trading future draft picks this year, here’s a reminder of the key rules you need to know.

1. No top fantasy players may be traded for future picks. Period. I make the final call on who meets that criteria. Generally, this means I will veto any trade involving the top 5 quarterbacks, top 10 running backs, top 10 wide receivers, and the top few tight ends. Additionally, defenses (DST) cannot be traded for future picks.

2. Draft pick compensation must be fair and within the set limits. The draft pick compensation traded or received cannot be a 4th-round pick or higher (i.e., no 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th-round picks). The compensation must be mutually agreed upon by both owners, and you are free to get as creative as you like. I will not mandate or assign compensation.

3. Trades must be fair and approved. If I determine that a trade is blatantly unfair, or if at least four other owners express dissatisfaction with any proposed trade, it will be vetoed. I am generally pro-trade and have not yet arbitrarily vetoed a deal.

4. Each team is allowed only one trade of this kind. No more than one future pick trade is permitted per team.

5. Trade submissions must meet the deadline. Trades involving future picks can be submitted anytime prior to Week 13.
